For each of us, trees represent a kind of drama—the centerpiece of a stage set, or even the main character. They bring to mind the Brothers Grimm and other old stories, in which nature can be beautiful, mysterious, and even ominous. Trees seem to hide their faces, yet sometimes we glimpse them laughing, dancing, gesturing, conversing, or contemplating. Within, they are no less varied and wondrous than they are from without. Through painting, sculpture, and pastel, Tree Stories explores trees as expressive characters, quiet witnesses, mysterious figures, and storytellers rooted in the landscape. Before returning to the earth from which they came, trees give us an opportunity to appreciate the diversity and beauty of their character.
