The artist must provide a return to the community, by means of temporary exhibit, performance, community education, publication, or as otherwise specified a portion of the funded project as defined in the proposal.
The Artist Grant is open to visual artists, writers, performers and musicians; showing serious intent and working to produce original material. The Cannon Beach Arts Association is pleased to announce that local playwright and director, Patrick Lathorp is the 2010 recipient of the Individual Artist Grant. The annual grant is awarded to a an artist, writer, or performer (or in this case, a playwright and director) to spearhead a project that will then be presented to the community at the end of the year.
The 2010-2011 project will be to create, cast, rehearse and perform an original musical play about the history of Cannon Beach entitled "Storms, Stories, and Songs: A History of Cannon Beach." In an interesting twist, Lathorp will be working with local school children to stage the production.
It is Lathorp's intention to spend the winter months researching and writing the play. Lathorp plans on utilizing the Cannon Beach History Center as a resource for defining his characters and the time periods, including historic images to create the scenery.
The opening performance of Storms, Stories and Songs will be on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 6pm with additional performances on June 18, 25 and July 2 or 3 at noon; all of the performances will be free. Auditions will occur next spring with more information to follow in the local press and on this website.
The CBAA provides a $3,000 Individual Artist Grant each year. This grant is intended to provide funding for an artist(s) to pursue a project of significance. The artist(s) must reside in Cannon Beach (including Tolovana Park and Arch Cape) for the duration of their project and provide a return to the community in the form of exhibit, performance, publication or other appropriate medium.
