Janet Bland & Pam Greene: Plein Air Paintings July 2 - July 27, 2009 and opening reception July 3, 6-8pm.

The Cannon Beach Gallery will be featuring the landscape work of painters Janet Bland and Pam Greene from July 2 – July 27, 2008 with an opening reception on Friday, July 3 from 6-8PM. Both artists work in the plein air tradition of setting their easels up outside to paint directly from nature. The paintings in this show will feature the North Coasts majestic landscape.
Pam Greene is based out of Portland and Manzanita, Oregon. As a former botanist, Greene understands the landscape as both a naturalist and an artist. When she is not working out of her studio on Neahkahnie Mountain, she is often outside painting plein air at Oswald West or Ecola State Park.
Greene is influenced by traditional Asian painting techniques that she translates into her own style of expressionist impressionism in large scale oil paintings. She is known for her compositions of waves that re reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints.
Greene says that she enjoys capturing the windblown Sitka Spruce as they frame views of the dramatic coastal cliffs of the North Oregon Coast. Driftwood arranged along the shoreline is another favorite subject of her work.
Artist Janet Bland is based out of Gearhart, Oregon where she finds inspiration from the local landscape. The paintings that she will be showing are part of a series called “A Sense of Place,” which were painted within a few miles of her home.
Bland said that her paintings are a conversation – between the paint, the place and the day. “This is a dynamic area, bold and beautiful, a changing environment, dominated by water – rivers, streams, lakes, estuaries, wetlands, and the Pacific Ocean,” Bland added.
Bland’s work was chosen for the last two “Au Naturel, The Nude in the 21st Century, shows at Clatsop Community College.
